Like the buildings in this original district, the Cotton House Hotel has an interior patio garden. Public parking lots and street parking are nearby, but the hotel does provide pricey valet service. The front desk staff and Concierge were excellent. Cruise lines employ crews dedicated to keeping public areas and high-touch surfaces clean. Galley crews and waiters receive extensive training on food safety and handling.
Norovirus can be especially challenging to control on cruise ships because of the close living quarters, shared dining areas, and rapid turnover of passengers. When the ship docks, norovirus can be brought on board in contaminated food or water or by passengers who were infected while ashore. Repeated outbreaks on consecutive cruises may also result from infected crew or environmental contamination. This is because norovirus can persist on surfaces for days or weeks and is resistant to many common disinfectants. Norovirus spreads easily in close quarters, such as those found on cruise ships.
What do cruise ships do to prevent norovirus outbreaks on board?
It's easy to make norovirus case numbers sound alarming, but context matters. For example, 100 cases on a single ship might seem like a lot, but on a vessel like Oasis of the Seas, which carries more than 5,400 passengers, 100 cases are only about 2% of the onboard population. Infected passengers who don't wash their hands after coughing, sneezing or using the restroom are the reason those surfaces become contaminated in the first place.
It sounds like a large number, but it amounts to just 0.02% (two one-hundredths of one percent) of cruisers throughout those 14 years, with the total number of cases decreasing from 4,507 in 2006 to 1,201 in 2019. Norovirus is the leading cause of outbreaks from contaminated food in the United States. Infected food workers are frequently the source of outbreaks in food-service settings, often by touching ready-to-eat foods, such as raw fruits and vegetables, with their bare hands before serving them.
Food, water, and surfaces contaminated with norovirus can also cause outbreaks. "Health officials track illness on cruise ships. So outbreaks are found and reported more quickly on a cruise ship than on land," reads the CDC's facts page. Norovirus is the most common of several viruses that cause severe gastrointestinal illness or acute gastroenteritis. Symptoms may include diarrhea and vomiting, as well as abdominal cramping, headaches, muscle aches and fever — an unpleasant experience any time but especially when you're on vacation. The number of outbreaks in the first six months of 2023 is higher than the yearly total during every year since 2012, when there were 16 outbreaks on cruise ships reported to the CDC.
They must also submit reports if 2% or more of the passengers and crew become ill and the ship is scheduled to visit a U.S. port within 15 days. If the number hits 3% or more, cases must be reported to the CDC even if the ship is not scheduled to call on a U.S. port within the next 15 days. The most commonly reported setting for norovirus outbreaks in the United States and other industrialized countries is healthcare facilities, including long-term care facilities and hospitals. Over half of all norovirus outbreaks reported in the United States occur in long-term care facilities. During that time frame, approximately 127 million passengers sailed on the 252 cruise ships under VSP jurisdiction. Of those 127 million cruisers, 26,450 reported symptoms of gastrointestinal illness while on board.
Several weeks prior, a Celebrity Summit cruise ship reported an outbreak of norovirus that sickened more than 150 passengers and 25 crew members, per the CDC. Another popular cruise line, Royal Caribbean International, has reported four outbreaks since January. Food that may be contaminated with norovirus should be discarded immediately. Kitchen utensils, counters, and surfaces should be routinely cleaned and sanitized before preparing food to avoid foodborne illnesses. That means data for norovirus on cruise ships is more readily available than for other entities.

Whatever happens, you can be sure that 2024 is going to be a thrilling year for the cruise industry. The first Sphere-Class ship, she will instantly become the largest ship to have ever sailed for the cruise line, with a gross tonnage of 175,500 and a maximum guest capacity of 4,300. At 250,800 gross tonnes and with a guest capacity of around 7,600, Icon of the Seas is much larger than the Oasis-class ships, and absolutely dwarfs the ships in Royal Caribbean’s Quantum Class.
At 180,000 gross tons, the ship (and sister ships) are the largest in the Carnival fleet, but also offer the most to see and do. Like her sister ship, Explora II will measure only 64,000 gross registered tons and host fewer than 1,000 guests per cruise. She'll also feature a gorgeous lobby bar, pool deck, and numerous dining options. Under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy, the luxury vessel is set to spend its inaugural season offering winter cruises in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe. A second U.S.-built cruise ship, the American Legend, is entering service in 2024. Under construction at the Chesapeake shipyard in Maryland, the 109-guest ship will spend its inaugural season beginning in November offering American Cruise Line’s Florida Gulf Coast & Keys Cruise.

There’s also a new milkshake bar, new Mediterranean eatery, and new sushi and street food window (which will also appear on Royal Caribbean’s later 2024 ship, Utopia of the Seas). Some trips will take travelers to destinations like St. Kitts and St. Thomas, with others calling at St. Maarten and St. Thomas. Western Caribbean itineraries include stops at Honduras, Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico. Icon of the Seas will offer a mix of new concepts and Royal Caribbean favorites among its eight onboard neighborhoods. World Adventurer will be the second of the new ships for Mystic Cruises launching in 2025, although information on this and World Discoverer is harder to come by. There aren’t a lot of details about the new ship, though we do now know the name, with the cruise line returning to the convention of using constellations for names.

Sister ship to P&O Cruises’ Iona, Arvia is an Excel-class cruise ship that boasts a few highlighted features. We’d argue that no ship is as anticipated in cruising (not just for 2024 but in history) than Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas. Anytime there’s a new largest cruise ship in the world, there’s reason for interest.
The ship will sail weeklong Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries, and each will visit Royal Caribbean's private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay, with its multiple beaches and Thrill Waterpark, home to 13 waterslides. Bookings open Monday for Royal Caribbean's past guests and Tuesday to the public. Viking's ocean ships have been reliably similar since the company started launching them in 2015. Viking Vela will break that mold when it arrives, as it will be slightly larger and carry 998 passengers. The extra space is being dedicated to an additional 17 cabins -- all rooms on Viking's ocean ships have views -- as well as storage space for additional technical equipment.
